Today, we will learn a very important concept called ‘Converting between place values’. Now, don’t let the big name scare you. It’s quite simple once you understand it.

What are Place Values?

Before we can convert between place values, we need to understand what a ‘place value’ is.

When we write numbers, each digit in the number has a different value depending on its position or place. For instance, in the number ‘345’, ‘3’ is in the hundreds place, ‘4’ is in the tens place, and ‘5’ is in the ones place.

How to Convert Between Place Values?

Let’s use an example. Suppose we have the number 450. We can break it down as ‘4 hundreds and 5 tens’. But what if we wanted to convert it into tens and ones? All we need to do is to multiply each digit by its place value. Here’s how:

• 4 hundreds = 4 x 100 = 400
• 5 tens = 5 x 10 = 50

So, 450 = 400 + 50

Handy Tips and Tricks

1. Remember the Order: The place values go in this order from right to left: Ones, Tens, Hundreds, Thousands, Ten Thousands, Hundred Thousands, and so on.
2. Use Zero Placeholder: If there’s a gap in place values, we use a zero to hold that place. For example, ‘204’ means 2 hundreds, 0 tens, and 4 ones.
