Understanding Addition of Money

Hello, Year 4! Today, we are going to learn about adding money. This is an important skill that will help you in everyday life, like when you go shopping.

What is Addition of Money?

When we add money, we are finding out how much we have in total when we combine different amounts.

Key Rules

  1. Same Units: Make sure all the amounts are in the same unit (pounds and pence). If they are not, convert them first. For example:
    • £2.50 + £1.75 is fine because both are in pounds.
    • £3.00 + 50p needs to be converted. Remember, 50p is the same as £0.50.
  2. Line Up the Decimal Points: When you write the amounts down, make sure to line up the decimal points. This helps you add the pounds and pence correctly.
  3. Start from the Right: Begin adding from the right side, just like you do in normal addition. Add the pence first, and then the pounds.

Tips and Tricks

  • Use Coins: If you can, use real coins to practice. This makes it easier to see how much you are adding.
  • Break It Down: If you find it tricky, break the amounts down into smaller parts. For example, if you have £2.30 + £1.60, you can add £2.30 + £1.00 first, and then add £0.60.

Example

Let’s look at an example together:

Example 1: £3.25 + £2.40

  1. Line up the amounts: 3.25 + 2.40 -------
  2. Start with the pence: 25p + 40p = 65p (which is £0.65)
  3. Now add the pounds: 3 + 2 = 5
  4. Combine them: £5.00 + £0.65 = £5.65

So, £3.25 + £2.40 = £5.65!
