Understanding Temperature

What is Temperature?

Temperature tells us how hot or cold something is. We measure temperature using a tool called a thermometer. The unit we often use to measure temperature is degrees Celsius (°C).

How Does It Work?

  • Hot Temperatures: When the temperature is high, like on a sunny day, we might say it’s 25°C or 30°C.
  • Cold Temperatures: When it’s cold, like in winter, the temperature might drop to 0°C or even below, such as -5°C.

The Thermometer

A thermometer has a scale with numbers. The higher the number, the hotter it is. The lower the number, the colder it is.

Key Rules about Temperature

  1. Freezing Point: Water freezes at 0°C. This means it’s solid.
  2. Boiling Point: Water boils at 100°C. This means it turns into steam (gas).
  3. Negative Temperatures: If the temperature goes below 0°C, we use negative numbers. For example, -1°C is one degree below freezing.

Tips and Tricks

  • Remember that 0°C is freezing, and 100°C is boiling.
  • You can think of temperature as a number line. Negative numbers are to the left of 0, and positive numbers are to the right.
  • When comparing temperatures, remember that higher numbers mean hotter temperatures.
