What is Rounding?
Rounding is a way of making a number simpler but keeping its value close to what it was. We do this when we want to make calculations easier or when we want to express a number in a more general way.
Why Do We Round?
Sometimes, we have very large or very small numbers, and rounding helps us to make them easier to understand or work with. For example, if you have 487 apples, you might say you have about 500 apples. This is easier for people to understand!
How to Round Numbers
Key Rules for Rounding
- Identify the Place Value: Decide which digit you want to round to. It could be the nearest ten, hundred, or any other place value.
- Look at the Next Digit: Check the digit to the right of the place value you are rounding to.
- If this digit is 5 or more, you round up.
- If this digit is 4 or less, you round down.
Examples
- Rounding to the Nearest Ten:
- 34: Look at the 4 (next digit). Since 4 is less than 5, we round down to 30.
- 46: Look at the 6. Since 6 is 5 or more, we round up to 50.
- Rounding to the Nearest Hundred:
- 238: Look at the 3. Since 3 is less than 5, we round down to 200.
- 754: Look at the 5. Since 5 is 5 or more, we round up to 800.
Tips and Tricks
- Number Line: Visualise the numbers on a number line. This can help you see which number is closer to what you are rounding to.
- Practice: The more you round numbers, the easier it gets. You can practice with everyday numbers, like prices or distances.
