Hello Year 6! Today, we’re going to learn about multiplying numbers by 10, 100, and 1000. This is a really important skill that will help you in many areas of maths. Let’s dive in!

Understanding Multiplication

Multiplication means adding a number to itself a certain number of times. For example, if you multiply 3 by 2, it’s like saying 3 + 3, which equals 6.

Multiplying by 10

When you multiply a number by 10, you can just add a zero to the end of that number.

Example:

  • 5 x 10 = 50
  • 12 x 10 = 120

Key Rule: Just add a zero to the end of the number!

Multiplying by 100

With multiplication by 100, you add two zeros to the end of the number.

Example:

  • 4 x 100 = 400
  • 15 x 100 = 1500

Key Rule: Add two zeros to the end of the number!

Multiplying by 1000

When you multiply by 1000, you add three zeros to the end of the number.

Example:

  • 6 x 1000 = 6000
  • 23 x 1000 = 23000

Key Rule: Add three zeros to the end of the number!

Tips and Tricks

  1. Visualising the Place Value: Remember that multiplying by 10, 100, or 1000 moves the digits to the left. For example, 23 becomes 230 (x10), 2300 (x100), and 23000 (x1000).
  2. Practise with Money: Think about how this works with money. If you have £10 and multiply it by 10, you get £100!
  3. Use Patterns: Each time you multiply by 10, 100, or 1000, the number gets bigger quickly. Notice the pattern in the answers.
