Introduction to Factors
Hello, Year 6! Today, we’re going to learn about factors and how to find them using division. A factor is a number that can be multiplied by another number to make a product. For example, in the multiplication 2 × 3 = 6, both 2 and 3 are factors of 6.
What Are Factors?
Factors of a number are all the whole numbers that can divide that number without leaving a remainder.
Example:
- Factors of 12:
- 1 (because 1 × 12 = 12)
- 2 (because 2 × 6 = 12)
- 3 (because 3 × 4 = 12)
- 4, 6, and 12 are also factors.
So, the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.
Finding Factors by Dividing
To find the factors of a number using division, we can divide the number by smaller numbers to see if they divide evenly.
Steps to Find Factors:
- Start with the number 1 and divide the target number by it. If there’s no remainder, it’s a factor!
- Continue dividing by whole numbers (2, 3, 4, etc.) until you reach the number itself.
- If the division does not leave a remainder, then the number you divided by is a factor.
Key Rules:
- Dividing by 1 and the number itself: Every number has at least two factors, which are 1 and the number itself.
- Only whole numbers: We only look for whole number factors.
Example: Finding Factors of 18
- Divide by 1:
- 18 ÷ 1 = 18 (no remainder, so 1 is a factor)
- Divide by 2:
- 18 ÷ 2 = 9 (no remainder, so 2 is a factor)
- Divide by 3:
- 18 ÷ 3 = 6 (no remainder, so 3 is a factor)
- Divide by 4:
- 18 ÷ 4 = 4.5 (this has a remainder, so 4 is not a factor)
- Continue until you reach 18.
The factors of 18 are 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 18.
Tips and Tricks
- Use a calculator if you’re unsure about your division!
- Make a list: Write down the numbers you’re testing to keep track.
- Remember: If you find a factor (like 2), you can also find its pair (like 9 for 18) by dividing the number by that factor.
