Introduction to Factors

Hello, Year 5! Today, we are going to learn about using factors to help us divide numbers.

What are Factors?

A factor is a number that can divide another number without leaving a remainder. For example, if we take the number 12, its factors are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12. This is because:

  • 1 x 12 = 12
  • 2 x 6 = 12
  • 3 x 4 = 12

Why Use Factors to Divide?

Using factors can make division easier. Instead of dividing a big number, we can break it down into smaller factors that are easier to work with.

How to Use Factors to Divide

Step 1: Find the Factors

First, you need to find the factors of the number you want to divide.

Step 2: Choose the Factor

Next, choose a factor to divide by.

Step 3: Divide

Now, divide the number by the chosen factor.

Example

Let’s say we want to divide 24 by 6.

  1. Find Factors of 24: The factors are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24.
  2. Choose a Factor: We have 6 as a factor of 24.
  3. Divide: Now, we do the division:24 \div 6 = 4

So, 24 divided by 6 equals 4.

Key Rules

  • Always find the factors of the number first.
  • Choose a factor that is easy to divide by.
  • Remember that some numbers can have many factors, but not all need to be used!

Tips and Tricks

  • Practice finding factors of numbers regularly.
  • Use a factor tree to help break down larger numbers.
  • Remember: if a number ends in 0 or 5, it is divisible by 5!
