What are Metric Units of Mass?

Hello Year 5! Today, we’re going to learn about metric units of mass. Mass is how heavy something is. In the metric system, we use specific units to measure mass. The main units we will focus on are grams (g) and kilograms (kg).

Understanding Grams and Kilograms

  1. Gram (g): This is a small unit of mass. It is used for lighter things. For example:
    • A paperclip weighs about 1 gram.
    • A slice of bread weighs about 30 grams.
  2. Kilogram (kg): This is a larger unit of mass. It is used for heavier things. For example:
    • A bag of sugar weighs about 1 kilogram.
    • A cat usually weighs about 4 kilograms.

Key Rules

  • 1 kilogram = 1000 grams. This is the most important rule to remember!
  • If something weighs more than 1000 grams, we usually say it weighs in kilograms. For example, if an object weighs 2500 grams, we can say it weighs 2.5 kilograms.

Tips and Tricks

  • Use a scale: To understand mass better, you can use a kitchen scale at home. Try weighing different items!
  • Visualisation: Think about everyday items. For example, a 1 kg bag of flour can help you picture what 1000 grams looks like.
  • Practice converting: Try converting grams to kilograms and vice versa. Remember, for every 1000 grams, you get 1 kilogram!
