Introduction to Counting in Large Numbers
Hello Year 5! Today, we’re going to learn about counting in large numbers: specifically in tens of thousands (10,000s), hundreds of thousands (100,000s), and millions (1,000,000s). This will help you understand big numbers better and make counting easier.
What Does It Mean to Count in 10,000s, 100,000s, and 1,000,000s?
When we count in these big jumps, we skip a lot of numbers. Instead of counting 1, 2, 3, and so on, we jump to larger numbers.
- Counting in 10,000s means we add 10,000 each time. For example:
- 10,000
- 20,000
- 30,000
- 40,000
- Counting in 100,000s means we add 100,000 each time. For example:
- 100,000
- 200,000
- 300,000
- 400,000
- Counting in 1,000,000s means we add 1,000,000 each time. For example:
- 1,000,000
- 2,000,000
- 3,000,000
- 4,000,000
Key Rules for Counting in Large Numbers
- Always start from zero or from the last number you counted.
- Add the number you’re counting in each time.
- For example, if you start at 10,000 and are counting in 10,000s, the next number is 10,000 + 10,000 = 20,000.
- Use place value to help understand large numbers.
- Each digit in a number represents a value based on its position (units, tens, hundreds, thousands, etc.).
Tips and Tricks
- Use a number line. Visualising numbers can help you see the jumps.
- Practice with your friends! Counting together can make it fun!
- Break it down. If you find it hard, count in smaller steps first before making larger jumps.
