Introduction to Times Tables
Hello, Year 4! Today, we are going to learn about times tables. Times tables help us learn how to multiply numbers quickly. This is super important because multiplication is used in many areas of maths and everyday life.
What is a Times Table?
A times table is a list of numbers that shows the results of multiplying one number by another. For example, the 2 times table tells us what we get when we multiply 2 by any number.
Example of the 2 Times Table:
2 x 1 = 2
————-
2 x 2 = 4
2 x 3 = 6
2 x 4 = 8
2 x 5 = 10
So, if you multiply 2 by 3, you get 6!
Key Rules for Times Tables
- Repetition: Each number in the times table repeats the same pattern. For example, in the 5 times table, you always add 5 each time: 5, 10, 15, 20, and so on.
- Commutative Property: This means that the order of the numbers does not matter. For example, 3 x 4 is the same as 4 x 3. Both give you 12.
- Zero Rule: Any number multiplied by 0 equals 0. For example, 7 x 0 = 0.
- One Rule: Any number multiplied by 1 stays the same. For example, 9 x 1 = 9.
Tips and Tricks for Learning Times Tables
- Use Songs: There are many songs available that can help you remember your times tables.
- Practice with Games: Play multiplication games with your friends or use apps to make learning fun.
- Write Them Down: Write out each times table several times to help you remember.
- Flashcards: Create flashcards with multiplication questions on one side and answers on the other.
- Count in Multiples: When learning the 3 times table, count in threes: 3, 6, 9, 12, etc.
