Understanding Tens and Hundreds Thousands

Hello, Year 4! Today, we are going to learn about tens and hundreds thousands. These are important parts of numbers that help us understand how big or small a number is. Let’s break it down together!

What are Place Values?

Every number has different places. These places tell us how much each digit in a number is worth.

  • Ones (Units): This is the first place.
  • Tens: This is the second place. It is ten times bigger than the ones.
  • Hundreds: This is the third place. It is ten times bigger than the tens.
  • Thousands: This is the fourth place. It is ten times bigger than the hundreds.

Visualising Place Values

Let’s look at the number 5,432:

  • The 5 is in the thousands place, so it stands for 5,000.
  • The 4 is in the hundreds place, so it stands for 400.
  • The 3 is in the tens place, so it stands for 30.
  • The 2 is in the ones place, so it stands for 2.

When we add them all together, we get:

$$5,000 + 400 + 30 + 2 = 5,432$$

Key Rules

  1. Reading Numbers: Always start from the left. The first number tells you the largest place value.
  2. Writing Numbers: When you write a number, place the largest number first and keep going to the right.
  3. Place Value Chart: Use a chart to help you see the values clearly: | Thousands | Hundreds | Tens | Ones | |-----------|----------|------|------| | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 |

Tips and Tricks

  • Flashcards: Make flashcards with different place values to help you remember what each digit stands for.
  • Count in Groups: Try counting in groups of ten for tens and groups of one hundred for hundreds.
