What is Perimeter?
Hello, Year 4! Today, we’re going to learn about perimeter. Perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a shape. Imagine if you were walking around a playground; the distance you walk to get back to where you started is the perimeter!
Key Rules
- What Shapes Have Perimeters?
- Perimeter can be found for many shapes like squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles.
- How to Calculate Perimeter?
- For rectangles: Add the lengths of all four sides. If the length is land the width is w, the formula is:P = 2l + 2w
- For squares: Since all sides are the same, if one side is s, the formula is:P = 4s
- For triangles: Add up the lengths of all three sides. If the sides are a, b, and c, the formula is:P = a + b + c
- For rectangles: Add the lengths of all four sides. If the length is l
- Units of Measurement
- We often measure perimeter in centimetres (cm) or metres (m).
Tips and Tricks
- Draw It Out: If you can, draw the shape. This can help you see where to measure.
- Use a Ruler: If the shape is not given in numbers, use a ruler to measure each side.
- Remember to Add: Always make sure you add all the sides together to find the total.
Quick Examples
- Rectangle Example:
- Length = 5 cm, Width = 3 cm
- P = 2(5) + 2(3) = 10 + 6 = 16 \text{ cm}
- Square Example:
- Side = 4 cm
- P = 4(4) = 16 \text{ cm}
- Triangle Example:
- Sides = 3 cm, 4 cm, and 5 cm
- P = 3 + 4 + 5 = 12 \text{ cm}
