Introduction to Dividing Decimals

Hello, Year 4! Today, we are going to learn how to divide decimals by 10, 100, and 1000. This is an important skill that will help you with your maths!

When we divide a number, we are splitting it into equal parts. Dividing by 10, 100, or 1000 is special because it helps us understand how decimals work.

What Happens When We Divide by 10, 100, or 1000?

  1. Dividing by 10: When we divide a decimal by 10, we move the decimal point one place to the left.
    • Example: 4.5 ÷ 10 = 0.45
  2. Dividing by 100: When we divide a decimal by 100, we move the decimal point two places to the left.
    • Example: 6.78 ÷ 100 = 0.0678
  3. Dividing by 1000: When we divide a decimal by 1000, we move the decimal point three places to the left.
    • Example: 9.123 ÷ 1000 = 0.009123

Key Rules to Remember

  • Move the Decimal: Always remember to move the decimal point to the left!
  • Count the Zeros: The number of places you move the decimal point depends on how many zeros are in the number you are dividing by:
    • 1 zero (for 10) = move 1 place
    • 2 zeros (for 100) = move 2 places
    • 3 zeros (for 1000) = move 3 places

Tips and Tricks

  • If you need to move the decimal point but there are not enough digits to the left, you can add zeros. For example, if you have 0.5 and you divide by 100, you can think of it as 0.50. Moving the decimal point two places gives you 0.005.
  • Practise with different numbers to get comfortable with this!

Let’s Practice!
