Introduction to Adding in Pounds and Pence
Hello, Year 4! Today, we are going to learn how to add amounts of money in pounds (£) and pence (p). Money is something we use every day, and knowing how to add it up is super important!
Understanding Pounds and Pence
In the UK, we use pounds and pence.
- 1 pound (£) = 100 pence (p)
This means if you have £1, it is the same as having 100p. When we add money, we need to keep this in mind!
Example 1: Adding Pounds and Pence
Let’s say you have:
- £2.50 (which is 2 pounds and 50 pence)
- £1.75 (which is 1 pound and 75 pence)
To add these together, follow these steps:
- Add the pence first.
- 50p + 75p = 125p
- Convert pence to pounds if needed.
- 125p is more than 100p, so we convert:
- 125p = £1.25 (which is 1 pound and 25 pence)
- 125p is more than 100p, so we convert:
- Now add the pounds.
- £2 + £1 + £1 = £4
- Combine everything together.
- £4 + 25p = £4.25
So, £2.50 + £1.75 = £4.25!
Key Rules for Adding Money
- Always start with pence. Add the pence amounts first.
- Convert pence to pounds if it’s 100p or more. Remember, 100p = £1.
- Then add the pounds. Don’t forget to include any pounds from the conversion!
Tips and Tricks
- Use a number line: This helps you see how much you are adding.
- Draw it out: If you can’t picture it, draw pictures of coins to help you add.
- Practice with real money: Use real coins to practice adding them together.
