What is Skip-Counting?

Hello, class! Today, we will learn about skip-counting by twos. This means we will count numbers by skipping every other number. Instead of saying “1, 2, 3, 4,” we will say “2, 4, 6, 8.”

Why is Skip-Counting Useful?

Skip-counting helps us when we need to count things quickly, like pairs of shoes or groups of animals. It makes counting easier and faster!

How to Skip-Count by Twos

  1. Start at 0 or 2: We can start counting from 0 or 2. For example, if we start at 0, we say:
    • 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, …
  2. Add 2 Each Time: Each time you say a number, just add 2 to the last number.
    • If we start from 2:
      • 2 (first number),
      • add 2 to get 4 (second number),
      • add 2 again to get 6 (third number), and so on.
  3. Practice with Objects: You can use pairs of socks or blocks. Count them in groups of two to see how it works!

Key Rules

  • Skip-counting can start at any even number (0, 2, 4, 6, etc.).
  • Always add 2 to the last number you said.
  • You can practice with real objects to make it fun!

Tips and Tricks

  • Use your fingers: Count in pairs using your fingers!
  • Sing a song: Create a little song to remember the numbers.
  • Play games: Find games online where you can skip-count.
