What is Skip-Counting?

Skip-counting means counting by a number instead of counting one by one. When we skip-count by tens, we jump over numbers and say every tenth number.

For example, instead of saying 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, we say 10, 20, 30, 40, and so on.

Why is Skip-Counting Important?

Skip-counting by tens helps us with lots of things in maths. It makes counting faster and easier, especially when we’re working with money or measuring things.

For example, if you have ten apples and you want to count how many you have after getting ten more, you can skip-count: 10, 20, 30!

How to Skip-Count by Tens

  1. Start with Zero: Begin your counting at 0.
  2. Add Ten Each Time: After 0, say 10. Then keep adding 10 every time: 20, 30, 40, and so forth.
  3. Practice Saying: Try to say it out loud. It helps to hear the pattern!
