Hello, students! Today, we’re going to explore what it means to be a geographer and how we study the world. Let’s get started!
What is a Geographer?
A geographer is someone who studies the Earth and its features. They look at how people interact with the environment and how places change over time. Geographers ask questions to learn more about the world around them.
Create Your Own Poster
For your poster, think about what a geographer knows, understands, values, and can do. For example, they might know about maps, understand climate change, value cultural diversity, and can conduct fieldwork. Make it colourful and creative!
What Three Aspects of the World Does a Geographer Study?
- Physical Geography: This includes natural features like mountains, rivers, and climate.
- Human Geography: This focuses on how people live, work, and interact with the environment.
- Environmental Geography: This looks at the relationship between people and their environment, including sustainability.
Look at the Front Cover of This Textbook
a) How Does It Show the World?
The front cover might show images of different places, landscapes, or people. This helps us understand the diversity of the world. It often uses bright colours and interesting visuals to attract attention.
b) What Do You Feel About This Image?
Think about how the image makes you feel. Does it inspire you, make you curious, or remind you of a place you know? Your feelings can help you connect with what you are learning.
c) Which Aspects of the World Does the Image Show?
The image may show physical features like mountains or rivers, human activities like cities or farms, or cultural elements like festivals. Each aspect helps us learn more about how the world works. Identifying these can deepen your understanding of geography.
Geographers Use Questions to Investigate Places
Using the enquiry questions in Image C, describe what you see in Photo B. Ask questions like: What is happening in this place? Who lives here? What natural features are visible?
Look at the Satellite Image of the World in Photo A
Name the continents and oceans of the world. You should be able to identify all seven continents: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. The oceans include the Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Pacific.
Stretch and Challenge
Geography is happening every minute of the day! Before our next lesson, find a news report in a newspaper or on a website. Describe what the story is about and why you think it is geographical, like climate change or migration.
