Introduction to Plurals
When we talk about more than one of something, we use plurals. In English, some nouns change their spelling to become plural. Today, we’re going to learn how to form the plurals of nouns that end in f, fe, o, and y.
Nouns Ending in F or FE
Key Rules
- Nouns ending in F:
- For most nouns that end in f, we change the f to v and add es.
- Example:
- One wolf → Two wolves
- One shelf → Two shelves
- Nouns ending in FE:
- For nouns ending in fe, we change the fe to v and add es.
- Example:
- One life → Two lives
- One knife → Two knives
Tips and Tricks
- Remember: f turns into v, and you add es!
Nouns Ending in O
Key Rules
- Nouns ending in O:
- Most nouns that end in o will add es.
- Example:
- One potato → Two potatoes
- One hero → Two heroes
- Exceptions:
- Some nouns just add s.

- One photo → Two photos
Tips and Tricks
- Check if the noun has a vowel before the o—if it does, usually just add s!
Nouns Ending in Y
Key Rules
- Nouns ending in Y:
- If the noun ends in a consonant followed by y, we change the y to i and add es.
- Example:
- One baby → Two babies
- One city → Two cities
- If the noun ends in a vowel followed by Y:
- Just add s.
- Example:
- One toy → Two toys
