Introduction to Compound Subjects and Objects
What is a Compound Subject?
A compound subject is when two or more subjects are joined together to talk about who is doing something in a sentence. We often use the word “and” to join the subjects.
Example:
- Tom and Jerry are friends.
- My sister and I went to the park.
What is a Compound Object?
A compound object is when two or more objects are joined together in a sentence. The object is what receives the action of the verb. Again, we use “and” to join the objects.
Example:
- I bought an apple and a banana.
- She gave me and my brother a gift.
Using Pronouns in Compound Subjects and Objects
When we have compound subjects or objects, we can use pronouns to make our sentences shorter and easier to read.
Examples:
- Tom and Jerry can become They.
- Original: Tom and Jerry are playing.
- With pronoun: They are playing.
- An apple and a banana can become them.
- Original: I bought an apple and a banana.
- With pronoun: I bought them.
Key Rules
- Joining Words: Use “and” to join two or more subjects or objects.
- Pronouns: Replace compound subjects/objects with the correct pronoun.
- For subjects: I, you, he, she, it, we, they.
- For objects: me, you, him, her, it, us, them.
- Agreement: The pronoun must agree in number with the subjects or objects (singular or plural).
Tips and Tricks
- Visualise: Draw circles around each subject and object to see how many there are.
- Practice: Try creating your own sentences using compound subjects and objects.
- Pronoun Matching: When using pronouns, think about whether you are talking about one person (singular) or more (plural).
