Introduction to Mass

Hello Year 4! Today, we are going to learn about converting units of mass. Mass tells us how heavy something is. We often use different units to measure mass, such as grams (g) and kilograms (kg).

What are Grams and Kilograms?

  • Gram (g): A small unit of mass. For example, a packet of sugar weighs about 1,000 grams!
  • Kilogram (kg): A larger unit of mass. One kilogram is equal to 1,000 grams. So, if you have 1 kg of apples, that’s the same as 1,000 g of apples.

Key Rules for Converting Units

  1. From Kilograms to Grams: To convert kilograms to grams, you multiply by 1,000.
    • Example: 2 kg = 2 x 1,000 g = 2,000 g
  2. From Grams to Kilograms: To convert grams to kilograms, you divide by 1,000.
    • Example: 1,500 g = 1,500 ÷ 1,000 kg = 1.5 kg

Tips and Tricks

  • Remember: 1 kg = 1,000 g. You can always use this as a quick reference.
  • Visualize: Think of a bag of sugar! If it’s 1 kg, it’s like having 10 bags of 100 g each.
  • Practice: The more you practice converting, the easier it will become!

Examples

Let’s look at some examples together:

  1. If you have 3 kg of flour, how many grams do you have?
    • 3 kg = 3 x 1,000 g = 3,000 g
  2. If you have 750 g of chocolate, how many kilograms is that?
    • 750 g = 750 ÷ 1,000 kg = 0.75 kg
