Introduction to Ordering Decimals

Hello, Year 4! Today, we are going to learn about ordering decimals. When we order decimals, we arrange them from the smallest to the largest or from the largest to the smallest. This is similar to ordering whole numbers, but we have to pay attention to the decimal points!

What is a Decimal?

A decimal is a way to show numbers that are not whole. For example, 0.5 is a decimal. It’s between 0 and 1. Decimals can have more than one digit after the decimal point, like 3.14.

How to Order Decimals

  1. Compare the Whole Numbers: Look at the whole number part first. For example, in 2.5 and 3.1, compare 2 and 3. Since 2 is smaller, 2.5 is smaller than 3.1.
  2. Look at the Decimal Parts: If the whole numbers are the same, look at the digits after the decimal point. For example, in 2.4 and 2.7, since 4 is smaller than 7, 2.4 comes before 2.7.
  3. Fill in Zeros if Needed: Sometimes, it helps to add zeros to the end of a decimal to make them easier to compare. For example, 0.5 is the same as 0.50.

Example

Let’s order these decimals: 0.2, 0.5, 0.1, 0.4.

  1. Compare the whole numbers (they’re all 0).
  2. Compare the decimal parts:
    • 0.1 (which is 1 in the tenths place)
    • 0.2 (which is 2 in the tenths place)
    • 0.4 (which is 4 in the tenths place)
    • 0.5 (which is 5 in the tenths place)

So, in order from smallest to largest, we have:

0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5.

Key Rules

  • Always look at the whole number first.
  • If the whole numbers are the same, look at the decimal places.
  • Adding zeros can help you compare more easily.

Tips and Tricks

  • Use a number line to visualise where each decimal is located.
  • Write the decimals in a list to see them better.
  • Practice with real-life examples, like ordering money amounts!
