Introduction to Counting in Hundreds

Hello Year 4! Today, we are going to learn about counting in hundreds. This is an important skill that will help you in many areas of maths.

What Does “Counting in Hundreds” Mean?

Counting in hundreds means that we are adding or counting by 100s instead of by 1s, 10s, or even 50s. When we count in hundreds, we jump from one hundred to the next.

How Do We Count in Hundreds?

To count in hundreds, we start at 0 and keep adding 100 each time. Here’s how it looks:

  • Start at 0: 0
  • Add 100: 0 + 100 = 100
  • Add 100 again: 100 + 100 = 200
  • Add 100 again: 200 + 100 = 300

So, when we count in hundreds, it goes like this: 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, and so on.

Key Rules

  1. Start at 0: Always start counting from 0.
  2. Add 100 each time: Each time you count up, you add 100.
  3. Skip the numbers in between: You don’t say 1, 2, 3, etc., just jump straight to each hundred.

Tips and Tricks

  • Use a number line: A number line can help you see where the hundreds are.
  • Think of real-life examples: For instance, if you had 100 stickers, then 200 stickers, and so on, you are counting in hundreds!
  • Practice with items: Use blocks or coins. Group them in hundreds and count them.
