What are Decimals?

Hello Year 4! Today, we are going to learn about counting in decimals. Decimals are numbers that have a whole part and a fractional part, separated by a dot (or point). For example, in the number 2.5, the “2” is the whole part, and the “5” is the fractional part. That means we have 2 whole units and 5 tenths!

When we count in decimals, we can start from a whole number and add decimal values. Let’s look at how we can do this in simple steps.

How to Count in Decimals

  1. Start with a Whole Number: Let’s start with the number 1.
  2. Add Tenths: When we move to the next number, we can add tenths. For example:
    • 1.0 (which is the same as 1)
    • 1.1
    • 1.2
    • 1.3
    • 1.4
    • 1.5
    • … and so on.
  3. Continue Adding Tenths: You can keep adding tenths until you reach 2.0.
    • After 1.9, you will reach 2.0.

  • Each whole number can be broken down into tenths, hundredths, etc.
  • The first number after the decimal is tenths, the second is hundredths, and so on.
  • You can count forwards or backwards in decimals.
