Year 4 Maths: Dividing by 10, 100, 1000

Hello Year 4! Today, we are going to learn about dividing numbers by 10, 100, and 1000. This is an important skill that will help you with many different maths problems!

What Does Dividing Mean?

When we divide, we are splitting a number into equal parts. For example, if you have 10 sweets and you want to share them with 2 friends, you would give each friend 5 sweets.

Dividing by 10

Key Rule

When you divide a number by 10, you move the digits one place to the right.

Example

Let’s look at the number 50:

• If we divide 50 by 10, we move the digits:$$50 ÷ 10 = 5$$
• So, 50 divided by 10 is 5!

Tip

Remember, when you divide by 10, the number gets smaller.

Dividing by 100

Key Rule

When you divide a number by 100, you move the digits two places to the right.

Example

Now, let’s divide 250 by 100:

• Move the digits:$$250 ÷ 100 = 2.5$$
• So, 250 divided by 100 is 2.5!

Tip

Dividing by 100 makes the number even smaller than dividing by 10!

Dividing by 1000

Key Rule

When you divide a number by 1000, you move the digits three places to the right.

Example

Let’s divide 3000 by 1000:

• Move the digits:$$3000 ÷ 1000 = 3$$
• So, 3000 divided by 1000 is 3!

Tip

Dividing by 1000 makes the number much smaller.
