Introduction to Grids and Coordinates
Hello Year 4! Today, we are going to learn about something very exciting: Grids and Coordinates! This will help us understand how to find places on a map or in a game. Let’s dive in!
What is a Grid?
A grid is like a big piece of graph paper made up of lots of little squares. It has horizontal lines (that go from side to side) and vertical lines (that go up and down). When we put these lines together, they create a lot of boxes.
Here’s a simple grid to show you:
1 2 3 4 1 ●---●---●---● | | | | 2 ●---●---●---● | | | | 3 ●---●---●---● | | | | 4 ●---●---●---●
What are Coordinates?
Coordinates help us find a specific spot on the grid. We use two numbers to do this. The first number tells us how far to go across (left or right), and the second number tells us how far to go up or down.
We write coordinates like this: (x, y).
- The x tells us the column (left to right).
- The y tells us the row (up and down).
For example, the coordinate (2, 3) means:
- Go 2 places across (to the right).
- Go 3 places down.
Let’s find (2, 3) on our grid:
1 2 3 4 1 ●---●---●---● | | | | 2 ●---●---●---● | | | | 3 ●---●---●---● <--- (2, 3) | | | | 4 ●---●---●---●
Key Rules
- Always start from the origin: The point (0, 0) is the bottom-left corner of the grid.
- Count across first: The first number tells you how many spaces to move right or left.
- Count up or down next: The second number tells you how many spaces to move up or down.
Tips and Tricks
- Remember: x comes first, then y!
- Use your fingers or a pencil to trace the lines on the grid if you need help!
- Practice with a friend by giving each other coordinates to find on a grid.
